Krakow Regional Census
A census of Jews in the immediate Krakow region was done in the years 1857, 1877 and in 1895. (The 1857 census seems to have been conducted over a period of 4 years, from 1853 to 1857). Names, family details, and locations from these census documents were transcribed and placed in a database. The handwriting on many of these documents was extremely difficult to interpret and, in many cases, the spellings of village names was guessed. Despite this, it has been possible to infer the true name of the village by comparing the 3 census documents, and by consulting a detailed maps. Wherever an inferred village name differs from the transcribed name, the inferred name has been written in parentheses with a following question mark e.g., 'village name?'. All the villages are located within a 12 mile radius of central Krakow. The fields that have been extracted are:
Census Year
Family number (Names with the same number are from the same family)
Last name
First name (Some census documents simply listed the number of children rather than their names)
Status: (e.g., head, wife, child)
House number: (1877 census only)
Village name
Village location: relative to Krakow
