Donations to the Kollel Galicia by Jews of Chrzanow ~ 1938

In a small room at the end of Rechov Mea Shearim in Jerusalem, lies the office of the Kollel Galicia. This Kollel had representatives throughout Poland/Galicia whose job it was to collect funds from their respective cities, and to forward it to Jerusalem. The funds were then used to support needy families in Jerusalem.

The Galician representative would collect the charity, and compile a list of all donors. The money, together with the lists, would be sent to Jerusalem approximately every 2 to 3 months. The Kollel would then issue receipts, which were mailed back to the representatives, who would distribute the receipts to the donors.

The Kollel Galicia has retained all its records and donor's lists from about 1908 until 1939, including extensive correspondence with their representatives.

The Chrzanow lists in the Kollel Galicia contain only the barest information: first name, last name, and amount donated (in zloty). However, they at least provide a date at which the individuals were known to be alive and living in Chrzanow.

This image shows the last page of a collection list with the name of the Chrzanow representative clearly marked at the top of the page: Israel Herszfeld.
